The Bioproduction Centre offers contract work in the areas of biomass and protein production, process development, product purification, and analyses. Our cultivation capacity consists of 5L, 20L and 600L bioreactors. The bioprocess group has vast experience with Escherichia coli, Pichia pastoris, insect and mammalian cells. Harvested cell cultures can be delivered directly or further processed downstream for recovery and purification of target product.

Description

The Bioprocess Pilot Plant facility at the Bioproduction Centre was upgraded in 2002. Major equipment included in the Pilot Plant are bioreactors up to 600 L scale, centrifugal separators, high pressure homogenisers, aqueous two-phase extraction system, and tangential-flow filtration systems. The Bioproduction Centre offers contract work for on- and off-campus clients in the areas of:

  • biomass and biomolecule production
  • process development and scale-up
  • product separation and purification
  • analyses
  • teaching and courses.

High pressure homogeniser

A number of downstream processing methods are available for concentrating and recovering partially or highly purified products produced in the bioreactor. In the case of intracellular products, the cells are harvested and then disintegrated to release the product. Before packed bed chromatography operations the product is separated from particulate matter like cell debris. We have great experience of continuous centrifugation, cell disintegration, cross flow membrane filtration, and extraction in aqueous two-phase systems. In the case of extracellular products the cells are removed by centrifugation, cross flow filtration or expanded bed adsorption.
