Plankton Analysis Facility
The facility houses microscopy and biochemical laboratories for plankton analysis as well as walk-in climate chambers for cultivation of plankton species. The benchtop equipment include microplate luminospectrofluorometer (FLUOstar Optima, BMG Labtechnologies), inverted and epifluorescent microscopes (Olympus AH2, Leica DM-IRB) with image analysers (AstroCam), PCR machines (MJ Mini-Engine, HP) and gel documentation system (Digi-Doc It, UVP).
The facilities are mainly used for microscopic, genetic and molecular analysis of free-living bacterio-, phyto- and zooplankton. See also our research interests on our institutional website.
The equipment is mostly used for:
- Taxonomic analysis of plankton samples and enumeration;
- Quantitation of macromolecules (nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes) in plankton using high sensitivity assays;
- Development of species- and group-specific genetic markers for identification and enumeration of uni- and multicellular organisms in environmental samples;
- LIVE/DEAD assays for bacteria, algae and zooplankton.
Accreditation is valid for 2011. Experimental advice and service are available at a self-cost basis. Access to the equipment is only possible after agreement.
