SLU Biobank is a biorepository for biological material originating from other organisms than humans (animals, plants and microbes). The purpose of SLU Biobank is to provide a quality assured infrastructure and routines for handling and storage of biological samples, as well as act as a platform for questions concerning sampling, handling and storage of samples.
SLU Biobank is located at three sites in Sweden: Uppsala, Umeå and Alnarp. The staff at the three sites has extensive experience in managing the type of samples that are collected and stored at the specific site. You can contact any of our sites and we will direct you to the most suitable co-worker to handle your inquiry.
We can store samples at room temperature, +4°C, -20°C and -80°C temperature-monitored freezers. Users may assign boxes/samples with back-up samples for their most valuable sample collections to the biobank storage facility.
Reception and handling of samples
We can receive, aliquot, extract DNA, and store samples by appointment. Samples and processes are traceable through our LIMS system. Users may request a total service of receiving, managing, aliquoting of samples, extractions etc. according to their needs.
Organization of sample collections
Our sample coordinators can aid in practical activity and advice in how to organize an existing sample collection and make it available for research collaboration. The Scientific Advisory Board decides on and prioritizes which collections and samples that the biobank can help to organize practically. Advice on how to perform an organization effort will be provided for all users.
Sample Collection Database
The Sample Collection Database is a register of sample collections where researchers can enter details on and contact information for their sample collections regardless of whether the collections are stored at the SLU Biobank facilities. The register is web-based and searchable by researchers in order to make it easy for potential research collaborators to find collection(s) of interest for new research collaborations.
Budget requests for Grant Applications
We provide estimated costs for sample management and storage for your grant application.
We provide advice and examples of documents such as ”material transfer agreements” and other agreements defining the legal use of samples stored in the biobank. This part will over time build up a library of example documents, advisory instructions, SOPs etc. Users can search the library and/or request that the biobank investigate a novel issue.
We can offer our services at a reduced price since we have basic funding from the collaboration between SLU and SciLifeLab-Uppsala. Through collaboration with the animal genetics laboratory and de dog genetic group (SLU and UU) we have cost synergy effects for instruments and housing. We calculate the cost of an assignment based on work hours, consumables and storage costs. The price is then reduced with the sum that is covered by our basic funding.
